Performance Studio Open House welcomes the general public into the performance practices of artists currently developing work at CPR. Rather than engaging a curatorial directed vision, CPR represents the diversity of artists and artistic practices that are currently occurring at its facility, inviting the public to experience the broad range of artistic processes and aesthetics involved in making contemporary dance work.
Each afternoon program of the monthly series features 2-4 artists. These artists have the opportunity show anything from short excerpts of a nearly completed work to improvisational structures drawn from their working process.
May Program
Christhian Diaz and Sonia Finley will present work that comes out of an ongoing collaboration. They explore ways of communicating, thinking and being present together through performance or inside the space of performance.
Choreographer Carlye Eckert and Juilliard Dance Alumnae Troy Ogilvie, Arika Yamada, and Esme Boyce have joined forces with Alice Island, the live sound collaboration of Daniel Newman and Bob Maynard to create Circumstance, Chance, Situation, a new dance. The piece first premiered March 2010 in the Under Exposed Series (curated by Jack Ferver) at NYC's Dixon Place.
A piece created for three female dancers and an extremely long rope, it explores themes of power (who has it, who doesn't), tension and release, and architecture: stability, destruction, chaos, and restraint. The dancers manifest and explore these ideas through the progression of time as their relationships change to the rope, each other, and the space.
