TTS EXTENDED is a performance built from Kinlaw’s 2021 debut LP record, The Tipping Scale. Reimagining the album and its contents as experiments in performance, Kinlaw has cast a dynamic group of movement and vocal artists who openly play in the live intersection of sound, voice, and dance.

The writing approach for this record was finding human entry points for storytelling related to motion. For this, Kinlaw would start with a gesture and let it build into something until a memory attached itself. The memory would become a story, and it would reveal itself as something important that needed to be expressed in this album. This worked, too, for the lyrical process, where harder and less smooth gestures would represent consonants, and smooth, flowing movements would become vowels. The result was an unraveling of intimate memories, a desire to learn from them, and a pathway of real-time psychological retrieval translating memory to movement, spoken word, and sound.

The Tipping Scale is an ideal metaphor for this umbrella of work, alongside the ever-present slipping in and out of acceptance of change. That jolt between the corporeal and the psychological is the primary focus of our performance.
